CLEAR SKY OVER LA PLAGNE

------------------------------------

AMBER / SPLIT CULTURA / CLEAR SKY OVER LA PLAGNE / A TRIP WITH LUM-CHAN - Early sound experiments by Nigel Harris.

I recorded sound experiments onto audio cassettes during 1981 to 1984 in the U.K. Instrumentation used: Domestic cassette tape recorders, radios, malfunctioning or hacked equipment, pieces of metal and other non-musical objects, LP record manipulation, water sounds, wind chimes, voice and sounds sampled from various media. As I think is evident from the recordings, the basic equipment I used was worked hard to attain the desired warped sounds, micro-collages and transformations. Some media samples are from things I was interested in at the time. I also made and used recordings from TV that are almost impossible to identify now. Some material was used in collaboration with Steve and Alan Freeman in our group Zircon and the Burning Brains in1983, otherwise the recordings remained unreleased until now. The recordings presented here are enhanced and re-edited from the original cassettes which somehow survived all the years of neglect and movement around the world. I here present them as a part of my usual music project: Scrapyard Sumire Gumi (すくらっぷ工場すみれ組). Artworks were made by myself during the1980s. Some of the sounds are quite harsh. I advise you to listen with care, especially when using headphones.

SCRAPYARD SUMIRE GUMI Tokyo, Japan

Formed in Japan in 2001 by Nigel and Miew, we make music mostly from toys, worthless scrap materials, very little musical ability and play. The early tunes are short and simple. Later we made elaborate works used for stage and art exhibitions. Some works were designed to be played as infinite loops in gallery settings. We only play imaginary concerts. ... more
